Human Growth Hormone (HGH): What Is It?

Human Growth hormone (HGH) is also known as somatotropin or somatropin which is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration in human beings and other animals. It is produced by the pituitary gland and is a type of mitogen which is specific only to certain kinds of cells. It spurs growth in children and adolescents. These hormones are used to regulate body composition, body fluids, muscle and bone growth. It also regulates sugar and fat metabolism and several heart functions. Human growth hormone (HGH) injections are now available in market for treating short stature of unknown cause as well as poor growth due to several numbers of medical causes. These include Turner’s syndrome which is a genetic disorder that affects a girl’s growth and body development. These injections can also be used for treating chronic kidney insufficiency and Prader-Willi syndrome which is a genetic disorder which rarely causes poor muscle tone, low levels of sex hormones and a constant feeling of starvation.

In case of adults, Human Growth Hormone (HGH) injections are widely used for treating short bowel syndrome. This syndrome causes a condition in which nutrients are not properly absorbed due to several intestinal diseases or the surgical removal of huge portion of small intestine. These injections are also used for treating muscle wasting disease associated with HIV/AIDs and HGH deficiency caused by rare pituitary tumours or their treatment. Some people prefer to use these hormone injections along with performance enhancing drugs such as steroids to build muscle and to increase their athletic performance. There are numerous side effects caused by using human growth hormone injections. Few of them include nerve, muscle and joint pain. It also includes swelling due to fluid in the body’s tissues which is commonly known as edema. Side effects also includes carpal tunnel syndrome, high cholesterol levels and numbness and tingling of the skin.

High used of human growth hormones can increase the risk of diabetes and also lead to the growth of cancerous tumours. These drugs are expensive and also many of them are not FDA approved. Usage of HGH products in form of pills and sprays claims to increase your body’s own production of HGH. Many company products claim to turn back your body’s biological clock. They can be used to reduce body fat. These hormones help in building muscle and also strengthening immune system. These drugs also promise to restore hair growth and colour and to normalize blood sugar levels.  Increase in energy levels, quality sleep, proper vision, good memory and improvement in sex life can also be seen by using these HGH drugs.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has not seen any visible evidence to support these drugs available in the market in form of injections and pills. Our body’s growth hormones usually decrease with age. Some anti-ageing experts claim that use of HGH products can restore age related bodily deterioration. But unfortunately, usage of human growth hormone (HGH) drugs for anti-ageing is not approved by FDA.
