Benefits of African Mango Extract

Natural compounds extracted from plants are very popular nowadays, as a result of extensive researches conducted in the search for substances that could treat diseases and infections without doing any kind of damages to the body. Besides interest shown by the medicinal sector, health industry is also enthusiastic about including these extracts in their supplements. One of this new age remedies is the one extracted from the African Mango tree, which has a surprisingly wide area of health benefits.

The African mango extract gained a lot of popularity after Dr. Oz specifically mentioned its effectiveness in weight loosing supplements. While supposed to be the best option for women over 50, it stills shows good effects on adults of any age. These benefits supposedly come from the inhibitory effect it has on the enzyme glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase involved in converting glucose to stored fat. It basically reduces the amount of fat which is stored, thereby diminishing weight gain. Other beneficial effects are exerted on the enzyme peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-gamma involved in adipogenesis and insulin sensitivity, as well as up regulation of the protein hormone adiponectin, which enhances insulin sensitivity and endothelial function. Last but not least it decreases leptin expression or enhanced leptin sensitivity, translated in inhibiting food intake and stimulating thermogenesis.

The effect of the African Mango extract was observed after a 1-month, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study surveyed the effects of African mango seed extract in 40 obese patients. 41 Patients were monitored 3 capsules containing 350 mg of African mango seed extract or oat bran (the placebo) 3 times daily, 30 minutes beforehand meals with a glass of warm water. Patients were on a normocaloric food and were evaluated every week, as well as trained to keep a record of food consumed. At the end of the research, patients treated with the seed extract had decreased body weight, waist and hip circumference, and metabolic parameters (cholesterol,  triglycerides, LDL cholesterol), and improved HDL cholesterol. Patients medicated with the extract also reported reduced systolic blood pressure. A good result that concluded African Mongo Extract beneficial effect on weight loss is not just a fairy tale.

Furthermore, it seems the extract from the mango tree also has beneficial properties that could help people with diabetes. This was shown after a 4-week long study was conducted on diabetic patients. Although the study is limited and not to be considered proof of African mango extract’s power to treat diabetes, it still managed to uncover some probable benefits it may have on diabetic people.

Other properties African mango may have are as an analgesic or antioxidant. The later effect is very appreciated in supplements that improve overall health. The African Mango extract seems to also have antibacterial and gastrointestinal properties, which could make it suited to be part of drugs that deal with this kind of problems. In conclusion the extract from the African Mango tree contains a very interesting mix of compounds with diverse benefits. This makes it suited to be part of supplements that strive to improve one’s health and maybe even as part of new age drugs in the future.
